I’m a mum, a coffee lover, and someone who really gets how much the little moments matter. I’m here to capture the love, the joy, and the feeling of what life looks like right now - so you can remember it always.
You’ve found your photographer (yay!) but now you’re wondering, when’s the best time to actually do the shoot? Maybe you’re expecting and dreaming of that soft, glowy maternity light. Or you’re trying to figure out what time of day will be the easiest for your little ones. Here are my go-to tips to help you pick the perfect time for your session without the stress.

1. Lighting is Everything
The best time for outdoor photos is during golden hour, that magical window in the hour after sunrise or just before sunset. Most photographers, myself included, will always suggest this timeframe. When you see your gallery, you’ll totally get why. The light is soft, warm and so flattering.
Golden hour gives us the perfect natural glow without the harsh midday sun. It helps avoid squinting, deep shadows on faces and gives your photos that dreamy feel we all love.
Happy, well-fed, well-rested kids make for happy photo sessions. Try to plan around their naps and mealtimes as best you can. If golden hour doesn’t quite fit with their routine, an indoor lifestyle session might be the better option.
In winter, golden hour can be as early as 4pm which works beautifully for early bedtimes. And if you’ve got more than one child, I always recommend planning around the youngest or most sensitive to change. I go by baby time. If your bub needs a feed, a break or a change, no stress, we’ll pause and go with the flow.
For toddlers and preschoolers, mid-morning or mid-afternoon usually hits the sweet spot. Well-rested and full-bellied is the vibe we want.
Overcast days are a gift. Cloudy skies create soft, even light and give us flexibility to shoot at almost any time of day. If you prefer a cooler, more moody tone to your images, this kind of light can give your photos a completely different feel compared to the warmth of golden hour.
At Willow and Rose Photography, I’ve spent the last five years capturing relaxed, joy-filled family moments across the Central Coast of NSW. My sessions are guided but never rigid. I let your kids lead, give gentle prompts and capture the real smiles and sweet in-between moments that make your family yours.
From beach sunsets to bushy hideaways, we’ll find the perfect spot for your session together. If you’d love more info or want to chat about your ideal time to shoot, reach out anytime. I’d love to hear from you.
