Picking the best time for your outdoor session
Have you chosen your photographer but now you are asking yourself when is the best time do your family photo session ? Perhaps you are expecting and you want that gorgeous glow like effect for your maternity photos or maybe just simply your wondering when would be the easiest time of day for you kids? Here are my tips to take the stress out of choosing when do to your portrait session.
1. Lighting is key
The best time to shoot in open spaces such as a field or a beach is during “golden hour”. Which is the last hour before sunset and the first hour after sunrise. Your photographer will probably already suggest to shoot during this time, as it’s probably the most preferred time to take photos! You’ll definitely see why in your photos- you will have the most beautiful flattering light.
Golden hour can produce a warm and soft glow which is perfect for portraits. During this time the sun is low and enables us photographers to block harsh light on the subject, avoid harsh shadows on faces and prevents people from squinting !
2. Work with your kids
When your kids are happy and comfortable, it will make for a better experience for everyone. Work within their schedule around naps and meal times. If a golden hour shoot doesn’t work for them, maybe an indoor home shoot would work better. Remember that during winter the sun sets much earlier, so if your kids have an early bedtime. Maybe a 4pm golden hour in winter would suit them best!
If you have more than one child it’s best to work around the youngest or most difficult to photograph child. I’m happy to work around your babies schedule, I always tell my clients I go by baby time. I’ll also make sure when we book your session we can be flexible during the shoot and give you extra time if your bub needs a milk break, nappy change or any other time of break!
For toddlers and pre-schoolers it is really important we find a time they are rested and have a full belly. Mid-morning or mid-afternoon are usually the best times.
3. Cloudy weather
Another great option is too shoot on a cloudy day. On a cloudy day, there is shade everywhere, so you can have your photos at any time of day. Which give you great flexibility when working around your own and your kids schedule. Also if you prefer cooler photos, the light will be very blue, giving the style of photography a different feel to “golden hour” which is very warm.
